CREATION - SEPERATION - RESTORATION - SALVATION
Creation
Genesis 1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Day 1 God said … v.3-5 “let there be light”
Day 2 God said … v.6-8 “let there be a firmament to divide the waters from the land (earth and Seas)”
Day 3 God said … v.9-13 “Let the earth bring forth” (grass, trees, fruit and herbs)
Day 4 God said … v.14-19 “Let there be lights in the firmament to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs and seasons and for days and years;” (sun, moon and stars to give light on earth)
Day 5 God said … v.20-24 “Let the earth bring forth every living creature”
And God blessed them (made holy, consecrated, hallowed, sacred)
6 DAY MAN
Day 6 God said … v.26 “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, let them have dominion over everything
RIGHTEOUS AND HOLY
Romans 1:17-17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
1 Peter 1:16 -16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
Ephesians 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love
V.27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (MANKIND)
V.28 Then God blessed them (made holy, consecrated, hallowed, sacred)
*** But what was before the days of creation?
John 1:1-5
The Eternal Word
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
Angels both good and evil (Satan chose evil) and,
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Satan’s fall v.2 and darkness was on the face of the deep Day 1 - v.5
Evil was here on earth for the serpent to deceive
God created everything in an orderly and systematic manner.
Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.
v.2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
v.3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
34x from Genesis 1:1 - 2:2:3 the Bible refers to God as God creating, speaking into existence or blessing His creations
*** Up to this point, this is an overview of each day of creation, but then the Bible takes us back to Day 6 starting in verse 2:4
The Garden of Eden
v.4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
v.5 before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground;
v.6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.
v.7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
v.2:7 “Of the dust of the ground” implies that there is nothing fancy about the chemical elements making up our bodies. The body is a lifeless shell until God brings it alive with his “breath of life.” When God removes his life-giving breath, our bodies once again return to dust. Our life and worth, therefore, come from God’s Spirit.
Q.Is there anyone in your life who is void of happiness, cold like a corpse, shallow and empty inside? Breathe God’s word into that person. (Whisper gently, not like a whirlwind)
Value life, as He does. Life is a gift and the giver is good! Live, laugh, learn, celebrate life and love God for giving us life. Let’s be thankful and grateful for what we have and live in God’s abundance.
*** Did you notice - Now He is Lord God, and over the next 18 verses that is what He is referred to.
Word Study - Lord is an appellation (title or designation) for a person or deity who has authority, control, or power over others acting like a master, a chief, or a ruler
*** Why is this important, we will find out very shortly...
Life in God’s Garden
v.8 The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.
v.9 And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
2:9 The name of the tree of knowledge of good and evil implies that evil had already occurred, if not in the garden, then at the time of Satan’s fall.
(V.10-14 describes the physical location)
10 Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.
11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12 And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there.
13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush.
14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
6 DAY MAN - PRESIDE-DOMINION
v.15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
This is our purpose - to tend to God’s creation, to manage His affairs, to do His Will.
What do these Parables have to do with this verse?
Luke 12:35-48- The Faithful Servant and the Evil Servant vvs42-44 and Luke 19:11-23 - The Parable of the Minas.vvs17-19
Tending and Keeping
6 DAY MAN - PROTECT
v.16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
v.17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
He already knew man would fall, He just told Him!
*** This is where God gave us our “Free Will”
God could’ve easily put the trees somewhere else on earth, right?
Q. Why would God place a tree in the garden and then forbid Adam to eat from it?
A. God wanted Adam to obey, but God gave Adam the freedom to choose. Without choice, Adam would have been like a prisoner, and his obedience would have been hollow.
The two trees provided an exercise in choice, with rewards for choosing to obey and sad consequences for choosing to disobey.
When you are faced with the choice, always choose to obey God.
James 1:2-5
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
6 DAY MAN - PARTNER
v.18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
v.19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.
Genesis 6:20 God said to Noah
...two of every kind will come to you22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.
6 DAY MAN - PROVIDE
v.20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
v.21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
What does the rib of Adam mean?
To reinforce the imagery of that unity, the scriptures indicate that God had figuratively taken a rib from Adam's side to make Eve, not from his front that she should lead him and not from his back that she should despise him, but from his side, under his arm, close to his heart
22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
Jehovah Jireh God always provides!
Took - put - brought- God is always in control, He knows what is best and who is best for us.
v.23 And Adam said:
“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”
v.2:21-23 God forms and equips men and women for various tasks, but all these tasks lead to the same goal—honoring God. Man gives life to woman; woman gives life to the world. Each role carries exclusive privileges; there is no room for thinking that one sex is superior to the other.
v.24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Almost every wedding ceremony has this scripture in it!
V.1:27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Alpha and Omega)
God’s plan for a perfect union male-female, not male male or female female
MARRIAGE
God’s creative work was not complete until he made woman (this is still Day 6). He could have made her from the dust of the ground, as he made man. God chose, however, to make her from the man’s flesh and bone.
In so doing, he illustrated for us that in marriage man and woman symbolically become one flesh. This is a physical and spiritual union of the couple’s hearts and lives.
Throughout the Bible, God treats this special partnership seriously.
The goal in marriage should be more than friendship; it should be oneness.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
both naked…not ashamed. With no knowledge of evil before the Fall, even nakedness was shameless and innocent.
Have you ever noticed how a little child can run naked through a room full of strangers without embarrassment? They are not aware of their nakedness, just as Adam and Eve were not embarrassed in their innocence.
Born into this world naked we will surely leave naked with nothing
Exposed, vulnerable
Seperation
Genesis 3
The Temptation and Fall of Man
v.1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
v.2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;
v.3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
v.4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
v. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Couple things going on in the first 5 verses here
Adam and Eve are naked and vulnerable but not ashamed
Serpent/Beast of the field v.14 coming up
Satan diminishes God’s authority and disrespects God’s name
Deception, planting doubt, questioning God’s motive
Notice how Satan didn’t and wouldn’t tempt Eve with the other tree - the Tree of Life
v.6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
v.7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
v.8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
v.9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
v.10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
v.11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
v.12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”
v.13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
v.14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
v.15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”
v.16 To the woman He said:
“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children;
Your desire shall be for your husband,
And he shall rule over you.”
v.17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
v.18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
v.19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”
v.20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
v.21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
God is back to being referred to as Lord God over the next several chapters.
God covered their sin with a sacrifice - the first animal sacrifice
v.22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”—
Notice how Satan didn’t and wouldn’t tempt Eve with the other tree - the Tree of Life in v.1
Jehovah Jireh God provided a way out - to take or come to freely (free will) the Tree of Life - Jesus
Finishing up…
v.23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.
v.24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
****Light Bulb Moment - more on Nakedness (that’s another Sermon) but after the flood in Genesis 9:20-23
v.20 And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard.
v.21 Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent.
v.22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.
v.23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.
We turn a blind eye and walk backwards covering up and making excuses for what is Godly, Holy and Righteous.
Did you know Noah was righteous? Genesis 7:1- Then the Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.
Sin was back in the world, and we have been trying to cover it up ever since*****
God did not lift the curse of death or take away sin in the world -
He just reset everything
Baptism by water - flood
Baptism of the Holy Spirit- walk with God again
Adam-
Romans 5:12-21
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
1 Corinthians 15:22
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
1 Corinthians 15:45
45 And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
1 Timothy 2:13-14
13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
2 Corinthians 11:3
3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
Eve -
2:18-24 God’s creative work was not complete until he made woman. He could have made her from the dust of the ground, as he made man. God chose, however, to make her from the man’s flesh and bone. In so doing, he illustrated for us that in marriage man and woman symbolically become one flesh. This is a mystical union of the couple’s hearts and lives. Throughout the Bible, God treats this special partnership seriously. If you are married or planning to be married, are you willing to keep the commitment that makes the two of you one? The goal in marriage should be more than friendship; it should be oneness.
2:21-23 God forms and equips men and women for various tasks, but all these tasks lead to the same goal—honoring God. Man gives life to woman; woman gives life to the world. Each role carries exclusive privileges; there is no room for thinking that one sex is superior to the other.
Tree of Life -
Revelation 22:2
2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Revelation 22:14
14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.
Adam and Eve’s sin separated them from the tree of life and thus kept them from obtaining eternal life.
Marriage
2:24 God gave marriage as a gift to Adam and Eve. They were created perfect for each other. Marriage was not just for convenience, nor was it brought about by any culture. It was instituted by God and has three basic aspects:
(1) The man leaves his parents and, in a public act, promises himself to his wife;
(2) the man and woman are joined together by taking responsibility for each other’s welfare and by loving the mate above all others;
(3) the two become one flesh in the intimacy and commitment of sexual union, which is reserved for marriage.
Strong marriages include all three of these aspects.
We often experience these same barriers in marriage. Ideally a husband and wife have no barriers, feeling no embarrassment in exposing themselves to each other or to God. But, like Adam and Eve (3:7), we put on fig leaves (barriers) because we have areas we don’t want our spouse, or God, to know about. Then we hide, just as Adam and Eve hid from God. In marriage, lack of spiritual, emotional, and intellectual intimacy usually precedes a breakdown of physical intimacy. In the same way, when we fail to expose our secret thoughts to God, we break our lines of communication with him.
Summary-
1 John 1:1-7
What Was Heard, Seen, and Touched
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— 2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
Fellowship with Him and One Another
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
